“The Choices of Master Gandalf” by Jef Murray
Artist Commentary: ‘Gandalf always appears to be a decisive and active figure, rarely showing the deep thought and intellect that reside behind the mask of the old bearded face. Yet, it occurred to me that he would have had many opportunities in the meditative atmosphere of Rivendell to contemplate his actions during the long struggles with Sauron. This moment of reflection is what I sought to depict in this image.’

“The Bridge of Khazad-dûm” by Jef Murray
Artist Commentary: The bridge leading from the eastern hall of the Dwarrowdelf (Moria) was created as a defensive structure. Only in single file could anyone cross the bridge, making its defense easy. This was the location of Gandalf’s battle with the Balrog of Morgoth.

“The Road to Minas Tirith” by Jef Murray
Artist Commentary: ‘Just before the siege of Gondor, Gandalf the White fled on Shadowfax with Pippin to the White City. The clouds were already boiling up from Mordor as war loomed’

“Out of Imladris” by Jef Murray
Artist Commentary: I awoke Saturday in the crisp predawn hours and at first knew not where I lay. But morning’s chill reminded me; I had vowed to paint the Imladris pass at daybreak, and so had camped in the high places that hem the blessed vale. I threw back my cloak and beheld the stars fading in the east; then, with numbed hands, I prepared palette and canvas. The first roseate rays were rising above the peaks when up from the valley rode two pilgrims on the path: a tall old man with a cloak and pointed grey hat mounted on a great white steed, and beside him, what appeared to be a tow-headed youth riding a pony. They greeted me heartily as they passed, the glory of dawn now rendering all of the mists of the new spring day in swirls of cobalt, violet, and gold.

“Home Again” by Jef Murray
Artist Commentary: ‘I spent Saturday in the Westfarthing. I met Mithrandir on the East Road, and we wended our way across The Water and up The Hill. Bilbo was bustling at Bag End, popping corks and stoking embers, and I begged leave to sketch the two scoundrels by the blaze of the drawing room hearth. Whilst I painted, we traded tales and tippled tea as, without, the gusty fall winds wailed’

“Brandywine” by Jef Murray
Artist Commentary: ‘The Baranduin river (recast as “Brandywine” by the Hobbits who lived near it) separated Buckland from the rest of the Shire. It could only be crossed readily via the Brandywine Bridge and by Buckleberry Ferry.
In this painting we’re resting with Gandalf and Frodo on a rise overlooking the river. It is a summer’s day and although there are some high clouds, the scene is one of peace and leisure…a true Shire outing through the beautiful rolling hills’

“The Grey Pilgrim” by Jef Murray
Artist Commentary: ‘I spent Saturday with Mithrandir walking the foothills of the Misty Mountains. The light was golden and it glowed on glade and glen, field and forest. We stopped to rest along the roadside and watched the sky turn from cerulean to violet as evening set in.’

“Resurrection” by Jef Murray
Artist Commentary: ‘Gandalf is a “servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor”. As such, he is given the grace to return after his mortal combat with the Balrog in the depths of Khazad-dûm. In this painting, I wanted to show the familiar Gandalf the Grey, but with that hint of grace flooding around him as he travels through the Misty Mountains’

“Slayer of Darkness” by Jef Murray
Artist Commentary: ‘I spent Saturday in the eastern deserts beyond the Sea of Rhûn. Among eerie rocks and escarpments, I pitched my easel and awaited the sun’s setting. As the last orange rays brushed rocky heights, a solitary figure with a jewel-bedecked staff appeared along the path. He cast a longing look westward in the gloaming, and the blue crystal atop his staff blazed as darkness descended’
