There is also limited room for creative and non-fiction submissions relating to Tolkien’s works, or to other fantasy works, which may fall outside of the theme of Issue #5. Publication is set for September 22, 2013 in both print and electronic formats. The deadline for all submissions is June 1, 2013.

The following file formats are accepted for artwork: JPEG (.jpg), GIF (.gif), EPS (.eps), Illustrator (.ai) and TFF (.tif/.tiff). The maximum size for art submissions (excepting artwork intended for the cover) is 8” x 10”. Silver Leaves accepts submissions from established scholars, authors, and artists as well as from those new to the publishing world. For written submissions, please take note of file formats, word limits, and reference styles necessary for submissions, as posted on the Silver Leaves Submission Guidelines page.

Silver Leaves began in 2007 as the official journal of The White Tree Fund, with previous issues focusing on such themes as Dragons, The Inklings, and Tolkien-inspired art and artists. Now, in partnership with Oloris Publishing, Silver Leaves will continue to produce issues which include a range of topics in features such as academic essays, creative writing, and featured artwork; interviews and event reports; artistic spotlights on costuming, weaponry, handmade items, and writing by invited guests; puzzles; humanitarian, community, and volunteer updates; and book and movie reviews. In the spirit of The White Tree Fund, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Silver Leaves will be donated annually to charity, and the journal will continue to feature articles and bulletins concerning issues which reflect The White Tree Fund’s focus on renewal, healing and enduring hope.

From the Shire to the Sea to be published by Oloris Publishing: New art book by Joe Gilronan to be released in 2014.
Oloris Publishing is happy to announce that From The Shire To The Sea by Joe Gilronan will be released in 2014. An artist who has used a variety of mediums, Gilronan offers an intriguing look at the world of Middle-earth. As to his fascination with this particular subject, Gilronan says:

“My first introduction to Tolkien started at the age of 10 when I heard a reading of The Hobbit on a British children’s show called Jackanory. This was the beginning of my passion for the writings and characters of J.R.R. Tolkien; I just loved the whole world that he had created and ever since, a part of me has remained in this world … art has allowed me to continue this magical adventure.”

The pages of this book of art are filled with beautiful, pastoral scenes from the Shire, yet span the spectrum to alarming pictures of the Ringwraiths on horseback.  Text includes the artist’s comments about the image, the technique used, and his ponderings about the scenes in relation to the stories. Gilronan is very involved with the project, carefully selecting the works to be included in addition to writing the text.
The major influences on Gilronan are two artists: J.M.W. Turner, and his father, R.A. Gilronan, a successful landscape painter in his own right. The use of light in the paintings is done in such a way as to make it look real, much like the work of J.M.W. Turner. Joe Gilronan says that he wanted to capture Tolkien’s epic tale From the Shire to the Sea, hence the title. In doing so, he also allowed himself to imagine what may have happened during the times between the scenes described in the books - such as Hobbit friends out for a stroll, or Ents peering through the bushes. All the different scenes and textures work together to capture the many facets of an enduring tale.
